As promised, we've recorded yet ANOTHER show this year. Will this mean a return to the weekly schedule we had when Sam was 7 years old? Will Sarah make more appearances? Will Sophie show up on the mic as much as old Annie did? Time will tell.

In this show, Sam talks about what it's like in high school, some Podcasts he's listening to and more.

Note to parents: This show includes a discussion of Sam's hospital visit. He's fine and we don't talk about the seriousness of the issue, but be aware that we do talk about it.

The Children of the Lamp series is what Sam is reading now. The book he talked about on the show is The Akhenaten Adventure. Check it out at your local library!

Together, we're also reading Les Miserables, after Sam became interested in the story behind the score of the Broadway musical. We're on page 127 now! Only 1328 pages to go!

Lastly, Sam serenades us at the end of the show with a song on his violin. He's just started learning, and he's practicing regularly now. One day when he's playing Carnegie Hall you can say you heard him way back when.

The Internet is a great source of research for our quiz questions, but be careful. You can't believe everything you always read on the computer. Make sure you do LOTS of research and check the sources of your material.

Lastly, here are links to equipment we use to record the Podcast. We definitely need our friends from Podsqod to give us some lessons in making this production sound better for you!

Recorder:

Sony Minidisc recorder. Note: Steve records directly into his computer at work using an M-Audio duo USB interface and it works great!

Microphones:

Steve: Electrovoice RE-20. Kind of expensive, but the sound quality is worth it. You should definitely get the shockmount for this which will quiet any desk-pounding you may do during the show.

Sam: DT290-80 headset mic. It's over $100, but sounds good (when the wearer is not overly figity).

Occasionally, we use a mixer, a cheap, but good Behringer, as recommended by our friends at Whole Wheat Radio.

And then for editing we use both Sony's Sound Forge and Adobe Audition 1.5. Sound Forge doesn't handle multiple tracks, like when you're trying to fade in music, so that's mostly what we use Audition for.

We're looking for a good compressor/limiter to help keep the dog/baby/telephone sounds out of the background, and something that will keep the recordings not as "noisy." If you have any suggestions, please let us know! We want to sound good for you!

The SG Show #6 - The show without Sam

Sam is anxiously awaiting the release of the sixth Harry Potter book and enjoying his last few weeks of summer vacation (he's in a year-round school), so Steve had to record this one solo. Sarah makes a cameo appearance.

Note: We'll be off on a road trip this upcoming week so the next show will appear in two weeks.

In this show, I read from Book 5 in the Harry Potter series and demonstrate the perils of trying to create unique voices for all the characters.

And to close out the show, which ended up being a standard-length program, rather than the shorter one I thought it would be, I read Sam and the Firefly by P.D. Eastman. If you haven't read it before, we highly recommend it, if only to enjoy the illustrations.

We talk about Sam's first experience away from home for a week, living in a bunk of 10 other seven-year-old boys at Camp Tawonga.

Sam talks about some books he's been reading, The Miserable Mill, book 4 of an increasingly unfortunate series. And, remember the Hardy Boys?

We discuss the G-rated movie we saw together after Sam got home from camp. Sam talks about the tune while Steve goes to IMDB to look up interesting facts about the film.
